The study, titled “Men’s Health: The Health Roles of the U. Drug-Free Market,” finds that men who used Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs for more than two decades experienced higher rates of sexual satisfaction, including less desire to have sex or to engage in sexual activity.
The findings suggest that many men have the same sexual health problems as the average American. But the drug has long been viewed as a treatment for sexual dysfunction, not a cure.
The study was conducted by the American Enterprise Institute, which represents the pharmaceutical industry, and found that the drugs most commonly prescribed to treat sexual dysfunction did not cure the problem. But they were effective at improving erection quality, and many reported a more satisfying sex life.
Researchers at the University of Washington, Seattle and the University of Texas, Galveston, Texas, found that men who used the same drugs for more than five years were more likely to have high sexual satisfaction scores.
For a quarter of men, the study revealed that men who used Viagra or another ED drug for more than five years were more likely to have improved sexual function, including more satisfying sex acts, more satisfying relationships, and more satisfying sexual encounters.

For example, one study in 2021 found that Viagra users had higher rates of overall satisfaction and erectile function improvement when compared to those not taking the drugs.
“It’s important to note that this was a study of men, not women, who were treated for sexual dysfunction,” Rosen said.
The study also found that men who used Cialis for more than five years experienced lower rates of sexual satisfaction and improved erectile function.
“In fact, men who used Cialis for more than five years were more likely to report improved sexual function,” said Dr. Andrew C. Rosen, a professor of urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
C. Scott W. Cunha, M. D., director of the Sexual Medicine Center at Johns Hopkins, said the findings show that men taking ED drugs for more than five years should be cautious about using them.
“The FDA is working with doctors, pharmacists, and insurance companies to ensure that men with erectile dysfunction are treated with these drugs,” Cunha said.
